The Art of Peace

Morihei Ueshiba, known as O-Sensei (Great Teacher), founded Aikido in Japan during the early 20th century. He synthesized his profound mastery of traditional martial arts, primarily Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu, with his deeply personal spiritual beliefs.

Following the devastation of World War II, O-Sensei transformed his martial system. He shifted the focus away from defeating an opponent and toward personal refinement and universal harmony. This philosophy earned Aikido its reputation as the "Art of Peace."

Today aikido remains non-competitive, and  depth of learning is explored through practice of hand techniques, wooden weapons (jo and bokken), iaido and zazen meditation.

Seminars and summer camps allow for exposure to regional and international teachers, and expands community and skills horizons.

Oly Medlicott

3rd Dan Aikikai

Oly Medlicott started Aikido in 2003 in Heidelberg and was drawn immediately by the way to learn it in a friendly and open atmosphere. When Oly moved to Singapore she met two wonderful teachers Serge Beraud and Thierry Diagana. They introduced her to Aikikai Headquarter in Japan and Birankai North America. Together they started Mumei Shudan Dojo in 2009, teaching kids, students and adults. Through hosting and attending multiple seminars Oly gained many friends and met her husband James. They are residing in Virginia since 2018. Oly continues learning Aikido through Alex Peterson Sensei and Birankai North America.
